PRP Therapy

PRP is the plasma fraction of autologous blood which has a platelet concentration above baseline (150,000 platelets/µL to 350,000 platelets/µL). To be labelled as PRP, a platelet count of 3‑5 times of the baseline should be present in the platelet concentrate. The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries, like- PDGR, VEGF, TGF-β, FGF, IGF, HGF, CTGF, EGF and basic proteins, adhesive proteins, coagulation factors, fibrinolytic factors, cytokines, protease etc. These cocktail of biomolecules present in PRP promote several key actions in the regenerative milieu, such as cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and angiogenesis.

The safety and efficacy of PRP therapies has been extensively demonstrated in different medical fields, including orthopaedics, sports medicine, oral implantology, ophthalmology, wound healing, dermatology etc.

PRP Preparation

PRP is generated by withdrawing peripheral blood with anticoagulants, followed by one or two-step centrifugation. The first step separates the red and white blood cells, which are much larger than platelets. The second step further concentrates the platelets and produces PRP with ~ 1 million/ul concentration (5x concentration).

In case of cosmetic application, only one spin is enough to get required concentrated PRP i.e~3 fold above the basal level.

What Makes SR-TE PRP Special

We have optimized a protocol for preparing PRP with a final count close to one million per micro litre. The protocol successfully eliminate WBCs – final count well below 1000/ul. Moreover, we have standardized an activation method to maximise the release of growth factors from platelets, so that even in the low platelet count PRP, the GF release was found to be matching those published in literature with 1 million/ul. The procedure is performed in a clean room to maintain sterility.

PRP Therapy FAQs

Is PRP Safe?

Platelet injections are safe. Since you are using your body’s own blood components and there are no foreign substances being injected into your body, there is no concern of disease transmission and the injections are considered safe.

How often can it be Given?

It varies from application. Usually 1-3 injections of PRP are given 2 weeks apart for orthopaedic application and 5-6 or more for cosmetic application like acne removal, hair fall etc. The number of injection is decided by the consultant. Repeat injections do not have any side effects as with cortisone injections.

How is it different from other product like hyaluronic acid and stem cell therapy?

PRP is an ideal treatment modality for those who prefer a less invasive option to surgery or those who are unable to undergo a surgery. It also allows for a much quicker recovery period and is much less painful than a surgery.

For PRP treatment the patient needn’t get admitted in hospital. Once the injection is done he/she can go back right away.

Moreover, several studies have shown that PRP is a safer and superior alternative to pain killers, corticosteroids and visco-supplementation (HA). It’s recommended for people who are keen to discontinue analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications.

In case of HA, pain relief is similar to steroid injections and modest clinical effect up to a maximum of 6 month .HA is only a lubricant and doesn’t contain any growth factor.

Stem cell therapy requires long period for cell culturing, so it is not as quick as PRP treatment.

How does it help in Healing?

A large amount of growth factors are released at the site of injury upon injection of PRP. These platelets induce an inflammatory response to initiate healing. The platelets are able to regenerate as well as strengthen cartilage allowing it to become firmer and more resilient. Moreover, it provides lubrication and reduces pain.

What are the Benefits of PRP Therapy?

  • Initiate healing
  • Helps in regeneration
  • Strengthen the cartilage
  • Provide lubrication
  • Reduces pain
